Hazel's Pain in the Neck

Hello Friends!

Hazel here today
to tell you about the pain in my neck.

No -
I am not talking about Mabel

BOL!

I look pretty happy in the above picture but
I have not been feeling that happy lately

I have been experiencing some pain in my neck area
Two rounds of prednisone did not get me better.
It made me feel better but
as soon as we backed the dosage off the pain returned.
Tuesday I had xrays done
and it seems I have a collapsed disc area

The best we can do is to manage the pain as best we can
so for now I will take prednisone and gabapentin.
If I get feeling really good we will reduce the prednisone and see how it goes. My dogtor would like it if I could just take the gabapentin (if it helps me) and only take the prednisone if I have a bad flareup. The goal is to keep me comfortable on the least amount of meds.

The hardest part is keeping me and Mabel from playing too hard. Our favorite thing to do is grab each others necks and shake but Mom & Dad won't let us do that anymore

Other than that I am fine -
 I am at a good weight - 14.8 lbs
so no diet necessary thank goodness!

  1. I don't know if it's availible in your area, but acupuncture was really helpful to Bart when he was having neck issues. Sending Rottie kisses!

Deary me... when playtime is curbed, it really is a pain! You are being really well cared for Hazel, so will include you in my POTP each day that the meds do their work quickly and you can manage it minimally! Bart's suggestion of accupuncture is a good one - works wonderfully for doggies! Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

  5. Ah!! Belle and Maddie play rough too! Maddie takes prednisone. The only thing I hate about it is that it changes her appetite.

  6. Oh gosh, I am so sorry! That sounds awful. Ruby strained her neck a few weeks ago, but fortunately the pain was only temporary.

  12. My human grandma took gabapentin for her pain and she had to get off of it cause it confused her and she couldn't remember thinks. Don't know if it has the same side effects in dogs just be aware if you start acting goofy.

    Aroo to you,

  16. Neck pains are very hard to live with. I know because it happened to me too when I was younger (a lot younger) and ran into the steps when I tried to jump up 3 steps at a time. (Not a good idea when you have short legs). I had to have surgery butt I'm all better now. I'm sending you lots of POTP for a quick recovery.

  19. You and I are too similar, Hazel. Same pain in the neck and even the same meds!!! Actually, the pred didn't help me so I stopped it. But I hope it helps you, and that you gradually get better and better. Thank goodness on the "no diet" news!

  20. Oh, that's no fun! Any pain in the spine/neck area is tough to take! I hope the pills - and some curtailed play sessions - will help! (Isn't it nice when the vet - or the doc - says you don't have to go on a diet?!)

Maggie, our senior sister had the same thing happen not to long ago and she had to be put in Jail cause Niles likes to agitate her and she tries to bite him and the dogter said that someone need jail time to relax!!! 28. Hi Hazel! I'm so sorry to hear your neck is bothering you. I hope the meds help to keep you comfortable. I make my dad give me massages - perhaps you can convince your 'rents to give you one, too. In that one photo it looks like Mabel's applying a "warm compress" to your neck, and by warm compress, I mean her head. :)

    -Love,
    Sid.
